Write Letters

In the early days of GreenGirls, we just wrote letters. Writing letters and making informed decisions about how we spend our money are some of the most powerful actions we can take as citizens and consumers. If this idea interests you, you might consider scheduling a letter writing meeting, which can be held in a public or private location.

Plug-In Hybrid Electric VehicleEach time we get together for this purpose, we bring different issues according to what's on our minds. Many issues need our attention, protection, and support. These include the protection of the quality of our air, land, water and food, as well as animals & other species; energy management, such as the development and use of renewable energy and clean transportation; sustainable agricultural methods; and environmentally-conscious business practices, such as incorporating energy efficient technologies by design and retrofitting, to name just a few.

Sharing and receiving information is the first step to becoming more responsible citizens and consumers. To accomplish this, you are encouraged to bring issues and ideas to share with the rest of the group. Issues can be local, national, or global in scope. In the interest of time, only one issue per person per meeting will be addressed.

Writing a thoughtful letter and sending it to the people who have the power to make changes is a powerful action. Generally, a handwritten letter is taken more seriously than a form letter, phone call, or e-mail. The message it sends to politicians and company executives is that someone cared enough to take the time to express their wishes personally and directly. A handwritten letter is considered to represent more than the single citizen or consumer who wrote the letter but also others who feel the same way but weren't willing to take the time to document their concerns.

GreenGirls write lettersIf you have an issue, be ready to brief the group about the issue and suggest what we might want to say in a letter. A sample letter, which clarifies the issue and offers possible language to use, is very helpful. Contact information, such as name and address, is essential.

Even if you do not have an issue to bring, please come to learn and take action. We need each other to remain hopeful, determined, and inspired.
